Novo Nordisk and OpenAI Team Up to Integrate AI from Discovery to Supply Chain
Novo Nordisk has entered a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate AI systems across its research, manufacturing, and commercial workflows. Initial pilot programs are expected across R&D, manufacturing, and commercial units, with broader rollout planned through 2026.
Novo plans to deploy AI tools across the full value chain, from early target identification and hypothesis generation to supply chain management and distribution, potentially shortening drug development timelines. In research, collaboration focuses on processing large biological and clinical datasets to identify patterns and potential drug candidates that may not be accessible through conventional analysis.
On the operational side, the partnership includes applications in manufacturing and logistics, where AI systems are expected to support process optimization, demand forecasting, and coordination across global supply networks. This reflects a broader shift among large pharmaceutical companies toward embedding AI not only in discovery pipelines but also in industrial and commercial infrastructure.
A central component of the collaboration is workforce development. OpenAI will support internal training programs aimed at increasing AI literacy across Novo Nordisk’s global organization, enabling scientific, technical, and operational teams to integrate AI tools into routine workflows.
The companies emphasise that the deployment will follow structured governance frameworks, including data protection controls and human oversight mechanisms.
The move builds on Novo Nordisk’s existing investments in AI partnerships.

Other recent news also suggests OpenAI’s interest in biotech is moving beyond generic enterprise tooling and into pharma-specific workflows. Aside from testing a dedicated ChatGPT Healthcare suite, it has been expanding collaborations with large pharmaceutical companies including Sanofi, Moderna, and Eli Lilly.
